One account after another
You join Facebook because everyone is there. Then you create an account on X (formerly Twitter), then Instagram for photos, then LinkedIn for work contacts, and the list keeps growing. Each time you agree to the terms of service, you usually also agree to notifications, digests and promotional letters.
Each network can send several letters a day. Leave your inbox alone for a week and the pile becomes hard to manage, and the letters that actually matter get lost among "someone liked your post".
Where temp mail is the right tool
A temporary email address is ideal for social media accounts you do not plan to keep: a test profile, a one-off contest, a short-term account to look at something that is only visible to members. You do not enter any personal information, the confirmation letter arrives on the page, and whatever the network sends afterwards never reaches your real inbox.
Where it is not
A temporary inbox is public: anyone who types the same address can read its letters, including a password-reset link. So never use it for your main profile, for an account with your photos and contacts, or for anything you would be upset to lose. Those accounts belong to an address only you can open.
Keep your main profile quiet
- Turn off email notifications in each network's settings; most let you keep only security alerts.
- Unsubscribe from digests using the network's own settings rather than links in unexpected letters.
- Watch for fake "security" letters that imitate a social network and ask for your password.
