Types of Protection You Need for Your Online Business
Online protection is not a single product. It is a few layers, each covering a different risk. Here are the four that every online business, however small, should have in place.
Ransomware protection
Ransomware is one of the most damaging modern threats. It encrypts the files on your computers, and the attackers demand payment for the key. Paying is no guarantee: the attackers may simply disappear, and without a backup the files are often impossible to recover. Prevention is the real defence.
- Keep regular backups in the cloud and on an external drive that is not permanently connected.
- A simple rule of thumb is 3-2-1: three copies of important data, on two different kinds of storage, with one copy kept off-site.
- Test a restore now and then; a backup you have never restored is only a hope.
Common antivirus protection
Malicious software has evolved a great deal and can hide in downloads, documents and websites. A reliable, reputable antivirus on every device, kept up to date, is a basic requirement for any business that works online.
Email protection
A large share of malicious software arrives by email, especially when work addresses are used to sign up for services nobody checked first. A temporary email box is a simple way to reduce that exposure: use it for trials, downloads and one-off registrations, and keep company addresses for customers, suppliers and accounts you depend on.
It takes no setup: the address is created automatically as soon as you open the site, without entering any information, and it is disposable and anonymous. Just remember that the inbox is public and short-lived, so business accounts and anything confidential never belong there.
Email is only one entry point, though. Keep software updated, use strong unique passwords with two-factor sign-in, and teach your team to pause before opening unexpected attachments.
Basic legal protection
Businesses online can find themselves in disputes over copyright, trademarks and other intellectual property, sometimes without realising they have done anything wrong. Having a lawyer you can turn to, and checking the licences for the images, fonts and code you use, saves a lot of trouble later.
These four layers do not cover every risk, but together with general awareness they put your business in a far safer position than most.
